NFTs… Why do they have value?
The metaverse and the digital revolution of Web3, NFTs, and cryptocurrency is a concept divided between boosters, skeptics, and dreamers. I count myself in the latter camp – I’m excited by the almost unlimited potential of a new digital universe. At the same time, I’m reluctant to be swept up by the current hyperbole. The future of gaming entertainment is, as ever, a work-in-progress.
Video games finally embrace LGBTQ+ romance
It’s not often that a video game trailer makes me go all gooey, but this one for The Sims 4 My Wedding Stories is a gorgeous festival of romantic excess. Timed for the Valentine’s Day season, the trailer promotes a new addition to Electronic Arts’ human life simulation The Sims 4, in which players plan the wedding of their dreams. The trailer is a mini-movie about two women who fall madly in love, and throw a beautiful marriage ceremony.

Why we need accessibility in video games
Players with disabilities deserve to enjoy video games. The recently released Halo Infinite attracted broad critical acclaim for its exciting action, lush world, and compelling story. But one review will have caused concern for the game’s publisher Xbox Game Studios. Critic Ben Bayliss at Can I Play That wrote that the game is marred by “clumsy implementation” of accessibility features.
What does Web3 mean for video gaming?
NFTs, Metaverse, Blockchain … and all that. As a concept, Web3 is best thought of as medicine. Like a handful of multicolored pills, each solution is part of a larger diagnostic that aims to heal all that’s dysfunctional with today’s model of digital monetization.
Hustling for the Metaverse
It all started a few weeks ago when Facebook unveiled their change of name to Meta …. And Mark Zuckerberg declared that Facebo…. Sorry we mean Meta, would be the pioneers to build the Metaverse, a fusion of the physical and digital worlds where humans can live, work and play in avatar form.
Eliminating violence against women
International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (25 November) is observed by the United Nations to take a stand against violence directed towards women and girls all around the world.
Violence against women in gaming
Violence against women is still prolific in the world of gaming… but there are signs of progress. Today (25 November) marks the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The question remains why, despite the progress of feminism over the last century, do we still need to stand against violence towards women. The U.N. estimates that at least 30% of women and girls (over the age of 15) in the world have been subjected to sexual violence at least once in their life.
Who are gamers, and where can they be found?
In a recent interview with AdWeek, Electronic Arts’ vice president of brand, Elle McCarthy, reflected on the ‘gamer’ identity. “I often get asked about how brands can partner with gaming or talk to gamers, but there’s really no such thing as gamers at all,” she said. “Did you know that only 14% of players self-identify as gamers and that is as low as 6% for women?”
Valve introduces UTM Traffic Analysis on Steamworks
Last week, Valve announced that it is updating its Steamworks platform by introducing an open-beta test for UTM traffic analytics.
Gaming’s endless struggle with abusive men
The details differ, but the pattern is always the same.
In times of trouble, games help to heal
Where once video games were restricted to entertaining patients in the children’s ward – itself a hugely valuable contribution – they are now being woven into treating children and young people for both mental and physical conditions.
Gaming, diversity, and the ‘Rooney Rule’
The “Rooney Rule” states that employers seeking out senior hires must commit to interviewing at least one minority candidate as part of each selection process. The rule encourages employers to make a greater effort towards diversity, without mandating quotas based on ethnicity.
Today’s games revel in creative subversion
I’ve spent the last few days comparing Games of the Year lists for 2020, with those of a decade ago, and more. I wanted to learn how much games have changed these past ten years, and what that might say about the state of gaming.
Game accessibility made huge strides this year
In 2020, accessibility moved to the center of game design. After years of ambivalence, activist campaigning, and a few well-meaning wrong turns, game companies are now placing accessibility as a priority.
How COVID changed gaming
As we await the arrival of vaccines, the COVID-19 global pandemic continues to wreak tragedy, chaos, and economic hardship throughout the world. In the specific arena of video games, the pandemic has created a strange set of circumstances triggering unexpected effects, ranging from monetary to cultural.
